William A. Stowe
Of Gaston County, William Stowe was born on January 31, 1832. He enlisted as a sergent in M company of the 16th North Carolina in May 1861. He worked his way through the ranks to eventually become colonel of the regiment by December 1863.
Stowe was wounded twice during the War: the first time at Gaines Mill during the Seven Days and the second time in the head at Chancellorsville. Nevertheless, he served until Appomattox.
Post-war, Stowe served in the North Carolina legislature. He also was a planter. He died on June 19, 1908.
