Edward Thomas Stakes

A native of Accomack County, Virginia, Stakes was born on September 18, 1835. Prior to the War, he was a brick mason in Northumberland County. He became captain of A company in May 1861, rising to major in September 1862. Stakes was captured in Northumberland County on June 2, 1863. Held as a POW for almost the rest of the War, he was exchanged in late February 1865.

Post-War, Stakes was a peace officer in Texas. He died in Beverlyville, Northumberland County on February 18, 1881. He was buried in Rehoboth Methodist Church there.
