Biography of Maurice Thompson Smith

Smith was born in Granville, North Carolina sometime in 1828. He attended the University of North Carolina and was a planter before the War.

Standing 5-11, Smith entered CSA service as captain of K company of the 55th North Carolina. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel by early 1863. Smith was killed leading his regiment at Gettysburg.
