Francis Williamson Smith
Born in Norfolk, Virginia on November 12, 1838, Smith was a graduate of the University of Virginia and VMI, class of 1856. He was General Robert E. Lee's military secretary in May 1861, then briefly served as major of the 41st Virginia. Smith was an aide on General Mahone's staff at Seven Pines. He was then assigned to the artillery at Drewry's Bluff.
In command of an artillery battalion during the retreat from Petersburg, Smith was mortally wounded at Amelia Springs on April 5, 1865. He died the following day.
