Abner Smead

The 19th Mississippi briefly boasted two graduates of the West Point class of 1854 as field officers. One was Colonel John Mullins; the other was Major Abner Smead.

Smead was born in Georgia on April 4, 1833. Prior to graduating 25th in his class from West Point (his compatriot Mullins was 43d), he attended the University of Virginia. He served as a lieutenant in the US Army, resigning to join first the CS artillery, then the 19th Mississippi as its major in June 1861. Smead was only briefly with the 19th Mississippi, joining the 12th Georgia five days later. Smead later served as A.A.G. to General Edward "Allegheny" Johnson and on the staffs of Stonewall Jackson and Richard Ewell as their assistant inspector general.

Named colonel of artillery in August 1862, Smead was later sent to Wilmington North Carolina in November 1864.

After the War, Smead was a doctor in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He died in Salem, Virginia on July 24, 1904.
