Joseph Hubbard Saunders

A life long bachelor, Saunders was born on October 23, 1839. He enlisted as a private in Company D of the 1st North Carolina in April 1861. Afterwards, he became captain of company A of the 33rd North Carolina. He rose to the rank of major by June 1863.

Saunders was wounded and captured at Gettysburg. After the War, he graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1866 and became a planter in Orange County. Saunders died in 1885.
