James Lawrence Orr

Born in Craytonville on May 12, 1822, Orr graduated from the University of Virginia. He was a lawyer and a member of the South Carolina legislature before the War. He opposed nullifaction and later served in the US Congress from 1849 to 1859.

Orr became colonel of the 1st South Carolina Rifles on July 20, 1861. On Feb. 1, 1862, Orr resigned his army commission to accept election to the Confederate Senate. After the War, Orr served as US Minister to Russia from 1872 to 1873. He died in Russia on May 5, 1873. His body was returned to the United States and he was buried in Anderson, South Carolina. The 1st Rifles are often known as "Orr's Rifles" after him.
