Biography of Joseph Jeohtha Norton

Norton was born in the Pendelton District of South Carolina on June 13, 1835. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1855 and married in 1860. He was a lawyer in Pickens, South Carolina before the outbreak of the War.

Norton joined the 1st South Carolina Rifles as captain of C company in July 1861. He eventually rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel to date from November 12, 1862. His career basically came to an end when he lost his left arm at Fredericksburg. He resigned from the army on May 25, 1863.

After the War, Norton became a judge and served in the South Carolina legislature. He died in Walhalla, South Carolina on June 20, 1896.
