William Frederick Niemeyer
A native of Portsmouth, Virginia, Niemeyer was born on May 12, 1840. He attended West Point but apparently did not graduate. He joined the Confederacy as a lieutenant of artillery in March 1861 and became lieutenant colonel of the 61st Regiment from his home state on May 22, 1862.
Niemeyer was wounded at Bristoe, but returned to the Army. Leading
his regiment at Spotsylvania, he was killed in action on his 24th
birthday.
This officer was a member of Mahone's Brigade in Anderson's / Mahone's Division.
