John Brown Moore
Born in the Palmetto State on March 22, 1835, Moore attended the University of Virginia and became a lawyer in Anderson, South Carolina. He enlisted as captain of L company of the Rifles in July 1861, rising to the rank of major by May 5, 1863.
However, ill health forced his resignation on August 28, 1863. He served two terms in the South Carolina legislature after the War, from 1868-1870 and again from 1882 to 1886. After fighting a duel with E.B. Murray, his successor in the South Carolina legislature, Moore moved to Colusa, California. There, he was a justice of the peace. He died there on November 22, 1926.
