Robert M. McKinney

McKinney was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on February 12, 1835. He lived in Lynchburg and was a member of the Lynchburg Home Guard during the antebellum period. An 1856 graduate of VMI, McKinney also was a professor at the North Carolina Military Institute in Charlotte.

In May 1861, McKinney became the captain of Company A of the 6th North Carolina. He was promoted to colonel of the 15th Regiment on June 24, 1861.

McKinney was killed at the battle of Lee's Mill on April 16, 1862.
