Robert Murphy Mayo

Briefly in command of Walker's Brigade of Heth's Division, Mayo later became a U.S. Congressman.

Born in Hague, Westmoreland County Virginia on April 28, 1837, Mayo attended William and Mary and later graduated from VMI with the class of 1857. He served on VMI's staff during the antebellum period as well as an instructor in mathematics at Mount Pleasant Military Academy, Sing Sing, New York. He studied law at Washington College during 1858 and 1859. He became a major in the 47th Virginia on May 8, 1861 and subsquently a colonel on May 1, 1862. Mayo was wounded in the arm during the Seven Days. He was paroled in Ashland, Virginia on April 27, 1865.

After the War, Mayo was admitted to the Virginia bar. He was elected member of the State house of delegates in 1881, 1882, and 1885-1888. He presented credentials as a Readjuster Member-elect to the Forty-eighth Congress and served from March 4, 1883, to March 20, 1884. He was ousted from office when George T. Garrison contested the election. Mayo tried running for reelection but was unsuccessful. He resumed his law practice. Mayo died on March 29, 1896 and was buried in Westmoreland County's Yeocomico Cemetery, Tucker Hill.
