William Joseph Martin
Born in Richmond, Virginia on December 11, 1830, Martin was a professor at Washington College in Pennsylvania (Chair of Natural Sciences) and at the University of North Carolina (Chair of Chemistry) prior to the War. He had graduated from the University of Virginia in 1851. He became captain of C company of the 28th North Carolina in 1861 and then major of the 11th North Carolina in April 1862. Wounded in the head and arm at Bristoe Station, Martin was promoted to colonel on April 27, 1864. He was wounded again, this time in the leg, at the battle of Jones' Farm on September 30, 1864. He returned to the ANV, however, and was present at Appomattox.
Martin was a techer in Columbia, Tennessee after the War. In 1870 he became Chair of Natural Sciences at Davidson College. In 1887, he served as acting president of the college. Martin died on March 23, 1896. Davidson University houses a collection of his papers.
