James Keith Marshall
"Jimmy" Marshall was born in Fauquier County, Virginia on April 17, 1839. He was a grandson of Chief Justice John Marshall. A graduate of VMI, class of 1860, he was a teacher in Edenton, North Carolina at the beginning of the War.
Marshall became a Captain of the 1st North Carolina "Bethel Regiment" in the spring of 1861. He was made colonel of the 52nd Regiment on April 23, 1862. He was promoted due to his skillful handling of his company.
Leading his regiment in Pickett's Charge on July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg, Marshall was struck by two bullets in the forehead while cheering on his men. He died instantly.
