John Osmond Long

Long was born in Illinois in November 1832 and graduated from West Point as a member of the class of 1854. He then served as a lieutenant in the army from 1854 to 1861. He became lieutenant colonel of the 22nd North Carolina in July 1861. Captured at Seven Pines, he was defeated for reelection in June while still in enemy hands. When exchanged, Long became a lieutenant colonel in the Trans-Mississippi and served on General Magruder's staff. He died on April 3, 1875.
