Stephen Lee

Lee was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1801 and attended, but did not graduate from, West Point. He was married before the War to a cousin and had 14 children. Prior to the War, he was the master of a boys school in Asheville, North Carolina.

He became colonel of the 15th and 16th North Carolina regiments on June 17, 1861, choosing the appointment with the 16th. He resigned his commission on Feb. 13, 1862 due to old age and illness. He later served as a captain with the Local Defense Troops.

Lee died in Asheville in 1879.
