Daniel Alexander Ledbetter

Gregg's South Carolina Brigade took severe casualties at Second Manassas. One of those casualties was Colonel D.A. Ledbetter.

Ledbetter was born near Pendelton South Carolina in July 1828. He was a physically impressive man, standing 6-4 and possessing a noteworthy voice. He began the War as captain of A company of the Rifles, rising to the rank of colonel on August 29, 1862.

In the vicious fighting at Second Manassas, Ledbetter was mortally wounded in the side. He lingered only a short time, dying on September 1, 1862. A member of the brigade noted he did not know Ledbetter but that "he was much esteemed for conscientiousness, vigilance, and courage." He was promoted to colonel to date from his mortal wounding.

In his report for the battle, A.P. Hill noted simply that Colonel Ledbetter "met a soldier's death."
