John Thomas Jones
Jones was born on January 21, 1841 in Caldwell County, North Carolina. All four of his father's sons would eventually serve in the CSA Army; two would not survive.
A student at the University of North Carolina when the War began, Jones enlisted in Company D of the Bethel Regiment. In September 1862, he joined the 26th North Carolina as its major. He was wounded by a shell fragment at Gettysburg.
On May 5, 1864, Jones was mortally wounded at the Wilderness. He lingered, dying early on May 6. Jones was buried in the Episcopal Chapel of Rest cemetery next to his younger brother Walter who had been killed at Gettysburg.
