Born on October 3, 1805, Jones graduated from South Carolina College and was a lawyer in Edgefield before the outbreak of the War. He served in the Seminole War as an officer and later was the first chairman of the Board of Visitors at the Citadel.
Jones became colonel of the 14th South Carolina on September 9, 1861. He resigned on April 11, 1862 because he felt slighted when Gist was appointed ahead of him. He thereafter served as Quartermaster General of South Carolina. Jones died on October 20, 1865.
