William Augustus Harris

Born in Milledgeville on November 18, 1826, Harris served in the Mexican War as a private and attended Oglethorpe College. Prior to the outbreak of War, he was a lawyer in Irwin County and served frequently in the state legislature.

He became captain of G company of the 14th Georgia, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel by October 1862. He fell from his horse and suffered a broken leg at Seven Pines. Harris resigned his commission in November 1862 and served in the Milita in 1864.

After the War he married in 1868 and served as Georgia's Secretary of State. He also practiced law in Isabella. Harris died on August 17, 1894 and was buried in Milledgeville.
