Stephen Fowler Hale
Hale was born in Crittenden County Kentucky on January 31, 1816. He was the son of a South Carolina Baptist minister. In the late 1830s, he moved to Greene County, Alabama to teach school and by 1839 became an attorney in Eutaw. In 1843, he was elected to the state legislature.
Hale served as a lieutenant during the Mexican War. He was later elected to the Confederate Congress. In June 1861, he became lieutenant colonel of the 11th Alabama. Hale was mortally wounded at Gaines Mill on June 27th and died in Richmond on July 18, 1862. He was buried in Mesopotamia Cemetery in Eutaw.
Hale County, located in the west-central part of Alabama, is named in honor of Colonel Hale. It was created in 1867.
