John Azariah Graves

From Caswell County, North Carolina, Graves became the captain of A company of the 13th North Carolina Regiment in April 1861 at the age of 38. He was later appointed major of the 47th North Carolina in March 1862, eventually rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Graves served with the regiment until he was taken prisoner at Gettysburg. On March 2, 1864, while imprisoned at Johnson's Island, Graves died. His body was sent to his friends in Philadelphia.
