John Alexander Gilmer, Jr.
Gilmer was born in North Carolina on April 22, 1838. He was the nephew of General J.F. Gilmer. He was living in Greensboro prior to the War.
Gilmer rose from lieutenant and adjuctant of the 27th North Carolina to eventually its command as colonel. He was wounded in the leg at Fredericksburg and then at Bristoe Station. In 1864, Gilmer became the commandant of Salisbury POW Camp. He retired on January 11, 1865.
Postwar, Gilmer served in the state legislature and on the state supreme court. He died on March 17, 1892 and was buried in Green Hill Cemetery in Greensboro.
