Greenlee Davidson
A Virginian and graduate of Washington College, Davidson was the original commander of the "Letcher Artillery." This Virgina unit was composed mainly of men with a reputation for being part of the "lower" strata of society, leading Davidson to bemoan the fact that "I have a very desperate & unruly set of men." Davidson commanded the Letcher Artillery Battery through the Light Division's early battles, although he missed Sharpsburg because his battery remained at Harper's Ferry. He was mortally wouned in action near Hazel Grove at Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863. Davidson's journal and papers are held today by the Rockbridge Historical Society.
