John Kerr Connally
The colonel of the 55th North Carolina, Connally was born in Jackson, Tennessee on September 3, 1839 and lived in Yadkin County, North Carolina. He attended the United States Naval Academy. Became the captain of B company of the 21st Noth Carolina in May 1861; became colonel of the 55th Regiment on May 19, 1862.
Connally was wounded at Gettysburg and was made a POW. He was exchanged in March 1864 and was wounded again at Cold Harbor and then again in September 1864. He resigned on March 7, 1865 and was paroled in Richmond on April 26.
After the War, Connally was a lawyer in Texas and served in the Virginia legislature. He died in Asheville, North Carolina on January 31, 1904. He is buried there at Riverside Cemetery.
