Lewis Minor Coleman

Lieutenant Colonel Lewis Coleman filled in for an ill R. Lindsay Walker and commanded the Light Division's artillery battalion during the Seven Days.

Born on February 3, 1827 in Hanover County, Virginia, Coleman graduated from the University of Virginia and served on the faculty there as professor of Latin. He was also principal of the Hanover Academy. When the War broke out, Coleman became the captain of the Morris (Virginia) Artillery in August 1861. He was promoted to major on May 12, 1862 and to lieutenant colonel on June 2, 1862. He was mortally wounded at the battle of Fredericksburg, dying on March 21, 1863.

A short memoirs of Colonel Coleman are extremely rare and were authored by J.L. Burrows under the title "The Christian Scholar and the Soldier."
