John Henry Caldwell

Caldwell

Caldwell was born in Huntsville, Alabama on April 4, 1826. After serving as a newspaper editor, he was elected to the Alabama legislature 1857 and 1858. He later studied law and was an attorney in Jacksonville, Alabama prior to the outbreak of the Civil War.

He became captain and rose through the ranks of the 10th Alabama quickly. Caldwell was wounded in the head at Fraizer's Farm and resigned in June 1863 to become the State Attorney for the 10th Judicial Circuit.

After the War, Caldwell was elected to Congress as a Democrat from 1873 to 1877. After serving his two terms he returned to the practice of law in Jacksonville.

He died there on September 4, 1902. He is buried in Jacksonville Cemetery.
