Biography of James Douglas Bruce

Bruce was born in Winchester, Virginia in July 1833. He was married twice. He graduated from VMI as a member of the class of 1853 and served as a civil engineer before the War.

Bruce joined the 47th Virginia as captain of I Company in April 1861. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel on December 18, 1864 despite suffering the loss of an arm during the Mine Rune Campaign. He was captured at Sayler's Creek and released on June 20, 1865.

Bruce died near Boyce, Virginia on January 18, 1922.
