Joseph Newton Brown

A native of Anderson, Brown was born there on December 16, 1832. Prior to the War, he was a lawyer in Laurens.

He enlisted in the 1st South Carolina as a private in January 1861, then became captain of E company of the 14th South Carolina in August. He rose to the rank of colonel by September 1863.

Brown was wounded at Gaines Mill and at Gettysburg. After the war, he authored a book on Gettysburg and Spotsylvania (the title was "A Colonel at Gettysburg and Spotsylvania" and it was published by Varina Davis Brown in 1931) and served in the state legislature. Brown died on January 24, 1920.
