Alfred Horatio Belo

Born in Salem on May 27, 1839, Belo attended the University of North Carolina then became captain of D company in the 21st North Carolina. After his defeat at the reorganization, Belo became quartermaster of the 55th Regiment. Belo fought a wartime duel with a member of the Mississippi Rifles. He was wounded in the leg and lung at Gettysburg and then was injured again at Cold Harbor. Nevertheless he survived the War and became a newspaperman in Galveston, Texas. He established the Dallas "News" in 1885. Belo died in Asheville, North Carolina on April 19, 1901. He was buried in Winston-Salem.
