William Baya
The 5-8 Baya was born in St. Augustine on January 23, 1834 and
entered service in January 1861 as a sergent-major. Baya also served in
the CS Marines. In November, he became captain of D company of the 8th
Florida. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel by early 1863. Baya
was wounded and captured at Fredericksburg. Returning to the army, he
was wounded again at Bristoe Station and at the Weldon Railroad. He was
captured at Saylers Creek and released in July 1865. Baya lived in
Jacksonville after the War. He died on July 1, 1903.
