William M. Barbour

Colonel William Barbour of Maryland lost his life while in temporary command of Lane's North Carolina brigade.

Born in Rowan County, Maryland on January 24, 1834, Barbour graduated from St. James College in Maryland. Subsquently, he was a lawyer in Wilkesboro. He enlisted as captain of Company F of the 37th North Carolina in the fall of 1861. He rose to the rank of colonel by July 1, 1862. He was captured in the fighting at Spotsylvania.

Returning to the army, Barbour suffered a leg wound in August 1864. He was then mortally wounded at Petersburg on September 30, 1864. He succumbed to his wounds on October 3. Barbour was buried in St. Paul's Episcopal Churchyard in Wilksboro.
