John Ashford

Born in Sampson on September 6, 1837, Ashford was a farmer before the War. Standing 5-10, he enlisted as captain of D company of the 38th North Carolina, eventually rising to the rank of colonel on June 18, 1864. Ashford was wounded twice during the War, the first at Second Manassas and the second time at Gettysburg. He served with his regiment until Appomattox. Ashford died some time during January 1889.
